Frequently Asked Questions
What will working with you look like?
If you’re not ready to begin and want to chat about the process, I offer free consultations to answer any questions and see if we are a good fit. From there, I provide you with access to the online platform which allows you to book and cancel, and attend sessions through videoconferencing. Our first few sessions are usually used to gather information discover what’s brought you to therapy, learn a little about your history and formulate your goals for therapy. From there, every session is different and is dependent on what you bring each day!
Why is therapy beneficial?
There are many benefits to therapy whether you are in a period of significant distress or just want to explore new ways of thinking and being. Therapists help you find your hidden strengths and support you in the process of problem-solving and self-discovery. You will often leave a session with new or fresh perspectives and ideas and learn something new about yourself each time. Some benefits include improved mood, a better sense of self, new coping and communication skills, quitting bad habits and developing healthy ones, better emotional regulation, and a sense of purpose.
What if I don’t know what to say?
You don’t have to have a plan for every session. Often when we come without expectations, we discover something that’s hidden under the surface of our consciousness. If you’re stuck, I’ll help you, and if you feel like you’re talking too much, I’ll pause you for reflection. Sometimes, we’ll sit silently and see what comes up, other times we’ll work more directly on your therapeutic goals.
How often should I have sessions and how long will I need to be in therapy?
The benefits of psychotherapy are best achieved from weekly sessions when first starting; however, I know that there are various barriers to that type of commitment. If biweekly suits your schedule better, we start there and as you feel ready, we space your sessions further apart. I don’t have specific timelines for the duration of therapy; it’s up to you! You may start to feel better and seek fewer sessions, and then find you need to return more frequently in times of increased stress/distress. Your consistency and commitment is key to feeling better.
What is your cancellation policy?
Please give 24h notice for cancellations or full fees will ensue. The same applies for accidental missed sessions. I understand there are extenuating circumstances which can be discussed on a case-by-case basis.
Is therapy covered by my insurance?
Many people have coverage for therapy through their employee benefits. Please check with your insurance provider to see if you are covered. I will issue you a receipt for reimbursement.
What does the “qualifying” mean after the Registered Psychotherapist?
Therapists who have recently registered to practice in Ontario enter a Qualifying category, which means they continue to receive regular clinical supervision as they accumulate experience.
